My work has been an artist search for a deeper understanding of my heritage and myself, using photography as a medium and the Appalachian people as collaborators with their own desires to communicate. I hope, too, that viewers will see in these photographs something of the abiding strength and resourcefulness and dignity of the mountain people...

I love these people, perhaps that is it, plain and simple. I respond to the sensual beauty of a hardened face with many scars, the deeply etched lines and flickers of sweat containing bright spots of sunlight...

My greatest fear as a photographer is to look into the eyes of my subject and not see my own reflection.

Cancer Ward - “Capturing the malignant truth”

“Capturing the malignant truth” – Cancer Ward, Government Hospital, Cochin. An exploration of a Government institution devoted to the care of cancer patients. In this institution, people from all levels of society (at present - mostly lower income group) find themselves in the same predicament, struck down by a disease that terrorizes and enervates them. The doctors in the ward do their best to keep their patient’s hopes alive, and in some cases treatment seems to be remarkably effective.

Raising The Next Generation in the Tenderloin, San Francisco.

The Tenderloin, situated in downtown San Francisco, is a dense residential and nightlife neighborhood. It has a rich history and a diverse ethnic community, but it also portrays significant poverty, homelessness, prostitution and high crime rates. The rapid growth of liquor stores (more than 60 in 2008), and strip clubs give the neighborhood a seedy reputation. Taking a step behind and looking at this neighborhood, I am curious to know how children can live a peaceful life. The Tenderloin has a large population of children, approximately 4,000, from mostly Southeast Asian families as well as Hispanic, Russian and African-American. These children living in tenderloin should be helped by educating them and providing them with a positive surrounding. Children born in this neighborhood are often having single parents, parents who are drug addicts or criminals. They take zero efforts to love or be affectionate to their kids. Most of the parents dont realize that it is very essential for the kids to get enough love and affection from their parents. I believe one of the main reasons is that the parents were facing the same situation when they were young. Talking to one the parents in the Tenderloin, she does not believe that education is an important factor for their kids. She said I did not find time to go to school and fill out the forms for them which is an absolute excuse. There are many children here who just wander around the blocks of Tenderloin and eventually they get involved in crime, drugs, etc. The Tenderloin has one of the city's highest concentrations of children and thus some one should step forward to help these children and show the positive side of life.

In my personal experience, calm nature and patience to listen to them helped me to get closer to their personal life and was among them to share their misery and struggle through their life as they narrated. I want to convey that they are not very different from us. I hope to reach my audience and convince them to look at the residents of the tenderloin in a new light, which in result will help the younger generation.

"Heather" often corrects people to call him a "she". She is a 51 years old man and wants to go through a gender-change operation. For the past 28 years, she has been living in the poverty stricken, tenderloin area of San Francisco downtown. Her wife and kids abandoned her, because they didnt understand her need to be a woman. Today, she has no family, and barely enough money to survive. She feels the loneliness around her, but she still maintains a positive outlook on her life.

When she reflects back on her life, she finds shes gotten some things right and some wrong, but she hasnt still given up on having a better life. Even with all her troubles, she takes a lot of efforts to look good as a woman. Sometimes, there are days when there is no money and no food, but when she can, she doesnt hesitate to share her food with the others around her. Shes been here for so long, these people she spends her time with, have become her new family. Facing her life as it is has made her unafraid and honest with herself and thus been able to look forward to everyday. She lives her life a day at a time, and hopes that one day, after her gender-change operation, she can go back to her children and live in happier times.
