SHELBY LEE ADAMS

About Shelby Lee Adams:
Shelby Lee Adam...excerpts from his artist statement

My work has been an artist search for a deeper understanding of my heritage and myself, using photography as a medium and the Appalachian people as collaborators with their own desires to communicate. I hope, too, that viewers will see in these photographs something of the abiding strength and resourcefulness and dignity of the mountain people...

I love these people, perhaps that is it, plain and simple. I respond to the sensual beauty of a hardened face with many scars, the deeply etched lines and flickers of sweat containing bright spots of sunlight...

My greatest fear as a photographer is to look into the eyes of my subject and not see my own reflection.

About Me

My Photo
San Francisco, California, United States
To me photography is a never-ending journey. Watching the play of light, fixing the composition, being in the right place at the right time and releasing the shutter on time to capture the perfect fame is what propels me forward. When I sit back and evaluate on my photography, there are some serious challenges that I find myself dealing with, firstly gaining access. A confident and fearless approach, coupled with a genuine and honest intend, has more often than not, given me access to the tightest of situations with utmost ease. I try and blend with the environment I shoot in, to capture it in its natural state, which allows me to punctuate my photographs with unique, intimate and graceful moments. Secondly, getting the technical aspects of my photographs right, without compromising on composition and framing, is a huge challenge that can be conquered only through sheer practice. And lastly, putting the images I photographed in the context of a story adds the much-needed finishing touch to a project.
